Get Off The Mat - Week 3

May 24, 2026    Pastor Fred Massie

This powerful message centers on the transformative truth found in Proverbs 24:16: a righteous person may fall seven times but rises again. Through the lens of Mark chapter 2, we encounter the paralyzed man whose friends literally tore through a roof to bring him to Jesus. What's striking is that Jesus addressed the man's deepest need first, saying 'your sins are forgiven' before healing his physical paralysis. This reminds us that our most pressing problems may not be what we think they are. We might be focused on our circumstances, our health, our relationships, or our careers, but Jesus sees deeper. He knows that our greatest need is always spiritual reconciliation with God. The story also illustrates the vital importance of community in our faith journey. Sometimes we cannot get ourselves off the mat alone. We need encouragers, people who believe in our potential even when we've failed, people who will carry us to Jesus when we lack the strength to get there ourselves. The message of Barnabas, whose very name means 'son of encouragement,' shows us how one person's willingness to believe in someone who failed resulted in the Gospel of Mark being written. When we fall, God doesn't want us to stay down. He wants us to rise, pick up our mat, and walk forward in renewed purpose.
