The Pilgrimage of Faith - Week 9

This powerful message takes us deep into Numbers chapters 11 and 12, where we witness a sobering lesson about humility versus ego. Fresh off the heels of God's judgment on complaining Israelites, we encounter Miriam and Aaron challenging Moses' authority, ostensibly over his Ethiopian wife, but really driven by jealousy and wounded pride. When Moses appointed 70 elders to help lead, his siblings suddenly felt displaced and diminished. Their complaint wasn't really about Moses' marriage; it was about their own status and influence. God's response was swift and instructive. He reminded them that Moses held a unique position, speaking with God face to face rather than through visions and dreams. The consequence was immediate: Miriam was struck with leprosy. What makes this story particularly relevant to us today is how it mirrors our own struggles with ego and discontentment. We live in an age of self-promotion, where everyone manages their own image through social media and selfies. Yet God's economy operates completely opposite to the world's system. The path to true greatness isn't found in exalting ourselves but in becoming servants. When we humble ourselves, God promises to lift us up. When we exalt ourselves, we position ourselves for humbling. This ancient story challenges us to examine our own hearts: Are we serving others with genuine humility, or are we secretly competing for recognition and status, even within our faith communities?
